A mathematics textbook publisher is developing a new senes based on the NCTM Standards and California Mathematics Framework. The series encourages theme-based projects, investigations, and hands-on mathematics, and offers new promise for improving mathematics. Researchers are consu ting with this publisher on design of multimedia materials for the series; and also with a computer company for designing simulation environments for powerful new, low-cost computers. Investigators are exploring issues related to the design of mathematics leaming environments: age-appropiate interfaces, integrating computer animation with video clips, achieving realtime interactivity, and costs for programming. The potential commercial application as described by the awardee: The research will lead to a technology component for innovative K-8 mathematics books, and mathematics components for children's hand-held computers.
