The project is exploring alternative approaches for the real-time synchronization, load balance, and data decomposition issues intrinsic to massively parallel contentionless visualization architectures. The scalable concurrent visualization system (SCVS) architecture addresses the visualization needs of gigantic (e.g., multigigabyte and terabyte) datasets expected from the Superconducting Supercollider and the Earth Observing System. The SCVS architecture eliminates the sequential visualization bottleneck found in existing massively parallel computer systems. However, complications arise in real-time display and processor synchronization, load balancing, and data decomposition software which must be resolved before a viable SCVS prototype can be built. The potential commercial application as described by the awardee: The research effort may find a role in atmospheric or pharmaceutical research areas. The architecture's scalability may find application in entertainment and other consumer-oriented fields.
