The primary objective of this program is to perform a critical analysis of how to optimize the coupling efficiency of a single fiber and a single mode laser diode operating at a wavelength of 1.3uM. A prototype hermetically sealable package will beused for measuring important parameters that will affect the coupling efficiency. The feasibility of designing a hermetically sealed package with a coupling efficiency of over 50% which can withstand temperature cycling of -40'C to +80'C will be established. The potential commercial application as described by the awardee: A reliable hermetically sealed package that has high coupling efficiency of single mode laser light into single mode fiber is the single most important element in the development of long distance high data rate fiber optic communications systems and would have immediate commercial application. General Optronics Corporation is primarily a manufacturing firm producing and developing semiconductor injection lasers as well as non-impact printers and fiber-optic communication systems.
