The goal of this project is to create an affordable system for optimizing the use of assistive devices (tablets) to improve reading and object recognition performance for individuals with visual impairments. The objectives are: (1) to select a suitable assistive device that can be paired with Aeons existing Digital Light Ophthalmoscope (DLO-LV) vision research retinal camera which maps the position of stimuli relative to the users retinal position and gaze to indicate areas of abnormal function; (2) measure baseline reading and object recognition performance using both devices; (3) measure performance of words and objects that are corrupted by noise using both devices; (4) develop and implement software-based image manipulations, e.g. magnification, contrast, and motion/flicker; and (5) measure reading and recognition performance of enhanced words and objects corrupted by noise using both devices.
