This project is concerned with a portable instrument for the laboratory quality data for EEG and polysomnography. The system will consist of a Physiological Monitoring Unit (PMU) connected to a host computer via a wireLess local area network. The PMU will include low noise preamplifiers and will also be able to monitor impedance. Oximetry, video and audio monitoring will be added to the system in Phase II. The analog section will be controlled by a microcontroller which is also interfaced to a PCMCIA interface. The data will be sent to the host computer where it can be edited, viewed on-line, or again retransmitted over a broadband network for remote viewing. The recording protocol will be modifiable, on-line with instructions from the host. The system will be software configurable so that it can find application in a variety of monitoring applications. A knowledge base and knowledge base editor will be added to the system in Phase II.Proposed commercial application:This system will be an economical entry, with laboratory quality data, into the portable EEG and polysomnography market. The portable system will provide a needed instrument for the emerging market of home monitoring, and the system's versatility will enable it to find application in many other monitoring applications.National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINCDS)
