This project will assess the ability of neural network based computer systems to assist physicians in diagnosing inborn metabolic disorders in children, including phenylketonuria (PKU), maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), tyrosinemia I, cystinuria, homocystinuria, urea cycle enzyme defects, organic acidopathies such as methylmalonic acidemia, isovaleric acidemia, and lactic acidemia. The project will result in the creation of a PC-based system comprised of neural networks, expert systems, online documentation and other supporting software, which will form the basis for a commercially supported diagnostic product available to physicians and medical laboratories.National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
