This project entails development and evaluation of a computer-based decision support tool MEDEAGOL which has been designed to provide guidance to attending physicians in the monitoring and management of patients in a critical care environment. The MEDEAGOL system is expected to address an important "illness" that contributes significantly to the mortality and morbidity observed in critical care medicine The "illness" is that of cognitive error and the treatment is improved decision support for the clinician. Initially data for the project will come from a series of case studies drawn from the files of physician-specialists in critical care medicine. The studies should provide a sufficient focus for the investigation and enable preliminary verification and validation of the model. An evaluation will be conducted to determine the potential impact of MEDEAGOL on patient outcome. Commercialization of the enhanced MEDEAGOL system will target vendors of sophisticated monitoring equipment who have come to recognized the need for such decision support tools.National Center for Research Resources (NCRR)
