We have assisted schools, communities and other organizations in designing alcohol and other drug (ATOD) prevention programs. One of its major tools is a copyrighted problem-solving model - the Laser Paradigm. The long-term objective is to develop a computer-based multimedia interactive version of the Laser Paradigm which will provide a greater number of organizations an opportunity to develop and use ATOD action- oriented prevention campaigns and problem solving groups. Although a facilitator will be used, the amount of time and costs necessary will be reduced. Phase I study has several specific aims: 1. evaluate and determine how to modify and adapt the existing Laser Paradigm so it can be used as an interactive multimedia program with minimal on-site support; 2. determine the interactive platform that will be used; 3. design and test the product prototype for effectiveness, ease of use, acceptability and appropriateness for training with potential consumers; 4. determine the level of support necessary to ensure the multimedia product will be understandable to users. Support may include on-line telephone technical assistance, on-site technical assistance manuals, and/or instructional video.National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
