Pendar Technologies proposes to develop the next generation of high power quantum cascade laser (QCL) systems with output power of more than 65 Watts. Our source will consist of beam-combined monolithic arrays of QCLs. The high power QCL system will benefit from latest advances in the area of active and passive thermal management solutions for high energy laser systems. Methods to manufacture the laser systems with high production yield will be studied.
Benefit: The development of high power, beam-combined quantum cascade laser arrays will result in higher achievable power levels and reliability from a significantly more compact and low-cost source than currently available. This technological advance is poised to disrupt numerous DoD applications, and in particular infrared countermeasure systems aimed at protecting ships and aircrafts from heatseeking missiles. Other potential applications include targeting and scene illumination. Civilian applications include detection of chemical hazards and industrial process control for example.
