The ability to visualize control systems, functions, and data in 3D by multiple operators simultaneously improves the collaborative understanding of platform state and health while reducing group cognitive load accompanying complex maintenance and monitoring tasks. Consequently, there is a need to improve the human-machine interface and communication between the operators while visualizing complex 3D data and systems. FoVI3Ds 3-person PRISM Common Operating Picture (COP) workstation is designed to improve operator efficiency and communication during complex 3D operations for both shore and ship Command and Control (CIC) centers. The PRISM workstation consists of wide field-of-view (FoV) monitors for rendering 3D content as well as high-resolution, 2D touch panels for the customized presentation of operator controls and data. Therefore, each PRISM operator can view the same 3D scene from unique or common perspectives simultaneously and still have job specific controls and data presented. Since there are no headsets obscuring natural vision, communication between individuals is unimpeded and natural. FoVI3Ds PRISM COP workstation improves situational understanding through the use of a single 3D visualization system that provides a common aggregated viewpoint of system and platform health to reduce cognitive burden and aid an operators decision capability for ship control systems.
Benefit: FoVI3Ds primary display product is the collaborative 3-person 3D visualization PRISM workstation. While the PRISM workstation is being initially funded by the Navy for researching 3D battlespace visualization and interaction paradigms, PRISM workstation is application agnostic and can be readily used for commercial applications such as Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC), Energy Infrastructure, and Emergency Response Systems FoVI3D is socializing PRISM with Austins Capital Factory, the local startup and technology incubator. In addition, FoVI3Ds is having PRISM technology and markets discussions with US-based investors to support a wide variety of potential applications. The goal of the PRISM socialization effort with Capital Factory and Investors is to develop a seed funding plan and raise series A funding to facilitate a limited PRISM production run and targeted marketing effort. To date, initial commercial PRISM market opportunities are likely to target AEC, energy, and educational opportunities. From the 3D visualization perspective, the 3D ship controls system research adds to the value proposition of the PRISM COP workstation product. Currently, PRISM is being socialized with Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing for market opportunities beyond the Navys CIC need.
