A compact hatchable transformer rectifier (TR) using high frequency magnetics is proposed. The equipment consists of three stages - the first stage converts the incoming medium voltage, line-frequency AC (13. 8 kV, 60 Hz) to a high frequency; the second stage consists of a high-frequency transformer for step-down; and the final stage consists of a rectifier that converts the stepped-down voltage to a DC output (+/-850 V). Silicon carbide devices which are capable of high-speed switching with low losses are used in the input and output stages to acheive high efficiency. Use of high-frequency instead of 60 Hz for the step-down transformer will lead to significant size and weight reduction. The TR will consist of silicon carbide and high frequency transformer building blocks in a modular structure with hatchable LRUs that enable convenient maintenance and repair. Analysis of alternatives and initial prototyping will be performed in Phase 1. Novel insulation approaches to acheive high reliability and allow easy cooling of the transformer will be investigated. Detailed performance metrics and estimates of size and weight for the TR will be developed.
