This project will demonstrate the ability to create portable and modular Smart Boxes designed to meet needs of the Navy and packaged within standard intermodal containers. Existing and proven mil-spec (where applicable) equipment will be integrated into a system that provides support for dedicated Navy maintenance activities at the depot-level and in austere environments in the future. The self-sustaining smart boxes will support maintenance activity for a minimum of 12 hours and up to a 1 week depending on the operating environment and design specification. The smart box can be deployed by a single person. When not in use, the smart boxes will require minimal maintenance.

Benefit:
There is an existing need for the Smart Box concepts developed under the Phase I project. Easily transportable containers with integrated support systems such as power, climate control, shelter, and dedicated equipment can be used by a range of private and public entities. These include public health workers during a pandemic, the construction industry, and emergency response. The systems can be purchased for continual use or rented on an as-needed basis. The integration of existing COTS products allows for rapid assembly when demand increases. The modular design and customization options allow for the end-user to specify their required toolset and operating needs including overall footprint, power requirements, equipment, and lifespan. The project is currently working with and will continue to work with shelter manufacturers and deployment specialists to commercialize the Smart Box concept. Numerous business sectors, including mining, oil, gas, and pipeline to name a few, involve field operations with a need for mobile maintenance and support facilities. We expect to supply these businesses worldwide with products adapted from this project.
