This Phase I proposal is to design and demonstrate a lower cost replacement Laser Module Assembly (LMA) for the Lightweight Wide Aperture Array (LWWAA) acoustic sensor system. We believe that our Virtual Ring laser Oscillator can offer a high-power, ultra stable, low phase noise and low-RIN 1550nm fiber laser that can meet and even surpass the currently deployed LMA based on the 1.3 micron Non-Planar Ring Oscillator (NPRO) at a lower cost, weight, power consumption and with better reliability.
Benefit: A number of DoD applications can benefit from further development and extension and the commercialization of the proposed laser oscillator technology, including perimeter defense, harbor security, oil exploration, coherent communications and LIDAR.
