Redstone Aerospace proposes the use of deep cryogenic processing to reduce corrosion effect and nonmetallic inclusions in fatigue crack formation, to increase fracture toughness and to impart wear resistant characteristics in forged Pyrowear 675 rotorcraft gears.

Benefit:
The use of this process will lower the total cost of ownership and significantly increase the life of gears in high heat and abrasive wear environments that frequently lead to discrete part failure. Commercialization applications include military aircraft bearings and gearbox items in jet fighters and rotorcraft as well as naval ship turbine and propeller shaft assemblies, industrial use in power generation, turbines, compressors and commercial opportunities in automobiles, trains and aircraft.

Keywords:
corrosion mitigation, corrosion mitigation, deep cryogenics, fatigue cracking, fracture, Thermal processing
