Helicopters are equipped with brush type 30 V dc generators. With increasing ac 400 Hz. power requirement, some of the dc power is converted to ac power using solid state inverters. This approach involves increased cost, weight and reduced efficiency of the electrical power system. This proposal provides an approach involving dual generators packaged in one assembly to provide a well regulated ac 400 Hz. and a well regulated 30 V dc power output, eliminating the need for additional inverters. This approach ensures that the generator package fits within the existing overall dimensions of the brush dc generator used on H-1 Y/Z helicopters. It is anticipated, that similar approach will be applicable to other helicopter platforms. Important issues in this dual output generator design are packaging and thermal management. Both of these are addressed within the envelop constraints and effective sef air cooling approach.
Benefit: Robust reliable efficient air cooled generator with dc and ac power output will be applicable in several military platforms including helicopters, army ground vehicles and marine applications on for the Navy. In non-military world, the applications will also for emergency helicopters and ambulances. Additionally it is expected certain utility vehicles such as food service trucks, ambulances, off road vehicles and earthmoving equipment will have the need for ac and dc power for operating a variety of commercial equipment and appliances.
