The development of a diffuse infrared wireless LAN designed to operate on IEEE802.11 standards at 1.0, 2.0 and 5.5 Mbps. The system componenets will include a PCMCIA card network interface card for portable computers, remote transceivers and an access point capable of demonstrating operation with seamless roaming on a plug and play basis into a wired 10\100 Base-T Ethernet LAN. The system will be capable of passing data as well as voice communications and will be designed to provide for location information in the future. It will also conform to DoD security requirements. Benefit IR based LAN''s are inherently more secure and are saferfor operation in EMI adverse environments, e.g. hospitals, network operations centers, munitions rooms, SCIF''s, etc. Keywords Wireless, Secure, LAN, infrared
