The Low Cost Space Coupled Phased Array Radar is a high performance, low cost, compact, totally integrated radar system designed specifically for mobile and small ship platforms. Design and cost objectives are met by use of an innovative space coupled array architecture which cost effectively utilizes emerging monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) and a sophisticated, compact waveform generator and signal processor employing readily available digital signal processors (DSPs). The array antenna design employs a space coupled array lens which physically separates the transmit/receive function from the beam steering function. This permits the design to make optimal cost effective use of MMIC technologies without incurring the high costs associated with having a T/R module for each array element as in a fully active phased array. By designing the array lens using "smart" phase shifters the beam steering command requirements and array wiring are significantly simplified. Innovative waveform signal generating and processing techniques based on the use of readily available DSPs results in a flexible, adaptable, yet compact, cost effective design for the radar waveform generator and signal processor which easily packages with the balance of the radar's electronic equipment within a standard rack assembly.
