We propose to develop a family of star and tree coupler systems that are modular. Each coupler system will include three modules: a fiber/cable input module, a routing module and a fiber/cable output module. The input and output modules will secure the strength means in the input and output fiber ribbon cables and each will use an MFP to position and support the individual optical fibers. These modules will provide separable connections to the routing module. The routing module will use planar waveguides to create the paths required for the star or tree coupling. Specifically, designs will be proposed for tree couplers with 1x2, 1x3, 1x4 and star couplers with 2x2, 4x4, 8x8 ports. We intend to use etched silicon micromachined components for the multi-fiber positioners, MFPs, which will position the optical waveguides. We intend to employ the

Benefit:
The direct benefit of this program will be the design, development and production of affordable, modular, star and tree optical coupler systems. The availability of a family of practical, affordable, and reconfigurable fiber optic couplers will assist system designers in creating optical systems for more powerful computers, for more extensive sensor applications and for enhanced data communications for both military and commercial customers. As envisioned, the proposed couplers will address needs from the OMNET, JSF and VITAL Programs. Perhaps the highest volume commercial applications would be in providing a cost-effective methods for connecting fiber optic lines to business and to residences for telephony, Cable TV and for the information superhighway.
