The design of vertically firing gun is merely a simplified version of a normal large caliber gun system. The fixed orientation of the weapon simplifies the ammunition feed and loading system as well as eliminating the need for an equilibration The challenges of the current proposed system are presented by rate of fire, vertical height limitation, structural required to accomodate high loads of short recoil, thermal management and ammunition handling system. Additionally, breech sealing and rem The objective of the proposed design is to obtain a reliable system within the various geometrical and environmental restraints which can vertically launch the specified projectiles at the desired rates.

Phase II

Contract Number: N00024-00-C-4090
Start Date: 4/24/2000    Completed: 4/24/2002
Phase II year
2000

The Phase II gun design will be a near-vertical 5-inch, smooth bore, automated gun. This gun will be capable of firing advanced 5-inch projectiles (e.g., ERGM and Best Buy) in excess of 40 nautical miles, with a design goal of greater than 60 nautical miles. The gun system is envisioned to be integrated in the current location of the Mk 26 Guided Missile Launcher System in current Navy Ships (i.e., Ticonderoga class, CG47-51), as well as future ships.

Benefits:
The gun system will met the goal of the Navy's surface warfare vision for the 21st century. The gun system will provide the Navy with a Land Attack Warfare capability - an offensive weapon capable of firing at long range, providing fire support for ground troops and delivering precision guided munitions
