H.P. White Laboratory, Inc. (HPWLI), a leader in the ballistic evaluation of materials, proposes an in-depth, matrix style analysis of NSWC test results for thermal protection systems in munitions packaging. Using our established expertise in environmental and ballistic test procedures, H. P. White Laboratory, Inc. will review current developments within the NSWC insensitive munitions program with an emphasis on applying promising new technologies to existing munitions containers. This study will encompass an in-depth analysis of the environmental constraints of current thermal protection systems, and will devleop real-world criteria for direct comparisions between protentially disparte protection concepts. The results of this review process will provide a clear and focused direction for a Phase II program plan for evaluating the performance of candidate materials.
Benefit: The proposed study will benefit the armed services by providing a basis for selection of safer munitions containers. Commercial spin-offs of this research could be used in the mining and aggregates industries for safer handling of explosives. Thermal barrier protection also extends into protection of intrumentation, and other sensitive components in high temperature environments.
