The Navy is being challenged in an era of shrinking budgets to meet its need for advanced capability ships. Available manual and computer-aided design methods do not provide the ability to quickly, accurately, and cost effectively assess the overall effects of proposed improvements to shipboard systems. A Parametric Analysis of Shipboard Systems (PASS) tool will be developed to enable ship designers and system engineers to evaluate changes in systems on the overall ship performance. The Phase I effort will result in the development of an object- oriented, user friendly, visual software application integrating shipboard system representations and first-principles system assessment algorithms. Use of the commercially available object-oriented application development environment called JSpace will provide for the seamless integration of the ship system information and the system assessment methodologies. To accomplish the Phase I efforts, we have formed a strong team of The SURVICE Engineering Company - a system engineering and visual computing firm - and Mr. Robert Barr - 44 years of ship design and assessment experience. The PASS application will be independent of ship type and will be equally applicable to both commercial and naval shipbuilding.
