The specific innovation that we propose is the implementation of an enhanced version of the INTERNIST knowledge base for internal medicine within the framework of a unique tool called EAGOL, which combines a capability for real-time diagnosis and recovery management with goal-oriented protocol generation and interpretation. This combination of reasoning engine and knowledge base will specifically address major desiderata for achieving health care and inter-vention within the operational constraints of space flight (Subtopic 12.04). The proposed innovation addresses the issues of computer-assisted medical monit-oring, diagnosis and treatment of crews in space, along with novel software methods for documentation, storage, retrieval, analysis and diagnosis of crew health. The latter objective will be addressed by exploiting the capability that the EAGOL architecture can provide for capturing the state of reasoning of a diagnostic and planning function as a dynamic part of a crewmember's "patient record". This then becomes a succinct encapsulation of information that can be downlinked to physicians on the ground; moreover, the potential is thereby created for ground-based medical staff and ground operations to engage in dialogue and interactive problem solving with both crew members and diagnostic and patient management systems in space.Commercial Applications:There is a demonstrated need in the healthcare industry for some type of standard, computer-based patient record that would facilitate information exchange between caregivers and other interested stakeholders. The model of the patient record proposed by Seer Systems is in a goal-based, protocol form which incorporates the physician's goals, intentions and methods. As such, the model departs from the traditional approaches, which tend to represent the record in textual, flowchart or coded form. The EAGOL-based patient record therefore could provide a foundation for the representation and communication of patient information between and among healthcare information systems and users.
