The traditional method of storing backup oxygen forExtra-Vehicular Activity is in the gaseous form in a pair ofhigh-pressure spherical tanks. This represents a considerable shrapneladiabatic expansion to atmospheric pressure from 6000 psia. Thisquantity of explosion energy corresponds to 66 grams of TNT. Alow-pressure oxygen storage system can be summarized in the reversiblewill lead to the desired temperature-pressure behavior for severalsystems of the above type. Brittleness is one of several characteristicsto be considered in this investigation of intermetallics and alloys thatwill take up and yield oxygen reversibly.Safe, high-density, solid-state oxygen-storage materials would have bothterrestrial and aerospace applications.solid-state, oxygen-storage, brittle intermetallics & alloysSTATUS: Phase I Only
