An existing single-mode, microwave applicator will be employed to investigate ceramic sintering. The applicator is unique in coupling efficiency and offers internal tuning for single-mode or controlled multi-mode operation. The project will define a large sample matrix in which the sintering parameters are systematically varied. The microstructure of the sintered ceramics will be evaluated and reported. These data will be an important contribution to the literature and an invaluable aid to the design of advanced microwave process equipment and sintering of advanced ceramic-based materials. This will be a cooperative effort with personnel at Michigan State University who will serve as technical consultants on the project and will provide the support to evaluate the sintered ceramics.
Potential Commercial Applications:Ceramic materials having improved properties could have applications for armor, superconductors, structures, and health care products.STATUS: Phase I Only
