Contract Number: HQ0860-22-C-7042

Phase I Amount
$150,000
In this SBIR project, we will optimize the design and develop the growth processes and equipment to routinely produce large, high-quality, single-crystal cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe or CZT) bulk material suitable for the production of CZT substrates for producing the highest-performing long-wave infrared (LWIR) detector arrays. Structured Materials Industries wished to improved manufacturing crystal growth systems and process technologies are needed to grow the highest quality crystals especially at and beyond 150 mm. Currently, CZT crystals are produced by the Vertical Gradient Freeze (VGF) technique, which needs growth furnaces with very tight control of the stability and uniformity of the high temperatures at the growth region which, in practical operation, is very difficult to achieve, especially as the growing crystal diameter increases. We are addressing these issues by improving the growth process and instrumentation. In Phase I, we will demonstrate proof of concept by growing high-quality 75 mm diameter 24 mm-long CZT crystals. In Phase II we will develop a scaled-up crystal growth process, at 150 mm, but suitable for even larger crystal growth, and optimize its performance as a substrate for MCT infrared detectors production. In Phase III we will commercialize crystals production by providing superior production tools/processes /to end-user foundries. Approved for Public Release | 21-MDA-11013 (19 Nov 21)

Phase II

Contract Number: HQ0860-23-C-7131
Start Date: 6/5/2023    Completed: 6/4/2025
Phase II year
2023
Phase II Amount
$1,466,228
In this Phase II SBIR project, we will optimize the design and develop the growth processes and equipment to routinely produce large (through 150mm), high-quality, single-crystal cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe or CZT) bulk material suitable for the production of CZT substrates for producing larger and highest-performing long-wave infrared (LWIR) detector arrays. We are addressing these issues by improving the growth process, hardware, control system, and associated instrumentation. In Phase I, we demonstrated proof of our concept by growing high-quality crystals directly from the melt. In Phase II we will further refine and build the scaled-up crystal growth technology, through 150 mm, but suitable for even larger crystal growth, and optimize its performance as a substrate for MCT infrared detectors production. In Phase III we will commercialize crystal production by providing and supporting superior production tools/processes/materials to end-user foundries.
