OFT Associates in collaboration with Andrew Company proposes to develop an in-fiber broadband phase modulator that would eliminate the need for an integrated optics modulator and provide the means to rapidly switch and tune fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filters. The proposed Phase I effort will determine the technical feasibility of realizing broadband phase modulation and electrical FBG tuning by inducing a large electrooptic coefficient in a specially designed fiber through UV-excited, static electric field poling of the light-guiding region of the fiber core and adjacent cladding.
