We propose to develop sensor technology capable of high resolution imaging of electromagnetic radiation in the energy spectrum spanning the ultraviolet to x-rays. Phase I calls for the fabrication of small scale image sensors. These sensors are fabricated from CMOS arrays, coated with selenium and then a conductive electrode. These sensors will undergo testing and performance evaluation for both x-ray and ultraviolet imaging. Phase II calls for the selenium coated CMOS arrays to be scaled up to meet requirements for a full-field, high resolution x-ray detector for digital mammography. In addition, the image sensors will be developed for the dual-use application of ultraviolet imaging. The sensor technology has dual-use applications for both BMDO and commercial applications. The BMDO application concerns an ultraviolet sensor array for detection of missile plumes. The commercial application concerns a digital x-ray mammography imager. Adept Design has been working extensively with ThermoTrex Corporation on the sensor development. The phase III commercialization plan involves production and marketing of the digital x-ray mammography imagers through the LORAD Division of ThermoTrex and for the dual-use application of ultraviolet sensors for missile plume detection.
