This proposal outlines the development necessary to realize VCL arrays in the 390, 450 and 500 wavelength regions, using a proprietary OCI frequency doubling technology, that could potentially result in room temperature short wavelength lasers with light output powers in excess of 1 mW.

Phase II

Contract Number: N00014-95-C-0306
Start Date: 8/31/1995    Completed: 8/31/1997
Phase II year
1995
Phase II Amount
$800,000
At present, there are no reliable compact laser sources available operating at shorter wavelengths than red. Blue and green lasers using II-VI materials have been demonstrated but only last a few hours at best. The purpose of Phase II will be 1) to achieve CW, room temperature operation of blue/green vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, and 2) to maximize the performance. The method to be used is an intercavity frequency doubling technique using AlGaAs as the nonlinear medium.
