Using a new discrete Gabor filter in a parallel architecture, extraction of edges, motion, and binocular disparity will be efficiently done. We coined the term "Silicon Cortex" for this architecture because its structure and function strongly resemble that of the visual cortex. The Silicon Cortex will significantly improve processing speed and will reduce cost and bulk for mid-level image processing functions. Applications include data compression for teleoperated behicles, medical image applications, and mobile robot vision.
