We propose to develop for the first time, a high performance, low noise amplifier in the 850 nm signal band using a Erbium-Terbium co-doped active fiber. Erbium-Terbium co-doped fiber optical amplifiers (ETCFOA) will be key components for short haul communication systems in the first telecommunication window and other dual-use technologies. This communication window is of particular interest because of the availability of low cost GaAlAs based transmitters and silicon receivers as opposed to the 1300 and 1550 nm signal bands.
