The air we breathe is polluted mainly by the factories and vehicles that are an integral part of modern technological society. The continued research for better control of the factors that effect environmental quality and public safety, must be intensified. Behnken and Associates, Inc. personnel have discovered a concept that offers a significant contribution toward eliminating air pollution from the primary sources. The concept consists of the creation of an ultrasonic radiation field across the smoke stacks, exhaust pipe, etc. to coagulate smoke/exhaust particles and thereby create greater mass particles that due to increased weight will ball and be collectable; thereby precipitating air pollutants. This Phase I program is directed toward the understanding of the properties of aerosols and interactions with ultrasound. The strategy to be pursued is to emphasize a theoretical approach with sufficient experimentation to demonstrate the concept. The overall objectives of this Phase I program are to determine the preliminary feasibility of the ultrasonic precipitator concept and to provide direction for Phase II prototype development and field testing.
