Magnetic/pneumatic vessel leak mitigation system this proposal addresses the economic and environmental problems resulting from leakage of petroleum and other products from water and land vessels. Also addressed is a low cost/benefit ratio system for externally controlling leakage from many vessels. Phase I will consist of examining and analyzing accident/leakage history to establish a basis for confirming the feasibility and range of utilizing magnetics and pneumatics to aid in stopping or mitigating leaks from vessels; reviewing and analyzing design and application concepts with present designers and manufacturers of magnetic, pneumatic and other related equipment; and designing, building and testing concept confirming models. Res: this program is expected to confirm the potential for utilizing magnetics and pneumatics for a wide range of leak control devices (LCD's) for commercial and government sea and land vessels. Systems with very favorable cost/benefit ratios that can be used extensively to reduce costs and protect the environment.
