Continuous monitoring of truck loads are tehreated by state-of-the-art measurement techniques. Monitoring may be either remote or recorded for local inspection. It is proposed to install strain gage load cells at the salient locations of the load support structure of trucks and provide appropriate signal conditioning in a secure mode to record or transmit the vehicle load status. The recording or reception can be inspected at a localized inspection station. Consideration is given to problems related to accurate summation of the forces applied under vibratory and rough road conditions including problems of side sway and bounce. The distribution of load may also be characterized by the methods of measurement that are planned. Study is also to be made to optimizing the system for cost effectiveness.
