This Phase I SBIR proposal is concerned with the development of a novel Modular Desktop Manipulator. Although there is a wide range of possible applications for this product concept, this proposal explores the feasibility of the Modular Desktop Manipulator in terms of facilitating access to hands-on science education environments for students with physical disabilities. A workplan is included for the construction of a working prototype of the system in conjunction with teachers and consultants. A pilot study of the device will take place, whereby students will perform tasks related to the physical sciences.Summary of Anticipated Results and Implications:It will be shown that the Modular Desktop Manipulator is a feasible concept that will permit students with physical disabilities to carry out effectively a wide range of tasks in a classroom setting in a way that is supportive of the students' learning and is easily facilitated by the teacher. The modularity and extensibility of the device will permit its use in a wide range of custom desktop activities. It is anticipated that the device will become a de facto standard for light manipulation tasks and that third party developers will create a wide range of commercially viable activity modules.
