We propose an innovative project in computer-aided problem-based learning which will stimulate the interest of both precollege and college students in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Problem-based learning is a hands-on, discovery-oriented approach to learning that involves students in an active manner. Students work on real-world problems, identify learning issues, and pursue their learning across several disciplines with the help of a facilitator. We will develop computer-aided support systems to facilitate problem-based learning for science education. Specifically, we will develop (a) an electronic repertoire of problems that can be used as resources for problem-based science education in a given domain, and (b) a computer system that lets students record their progress on the problem and, using intelligent systems techniques, automatically provides guidance and displays relevant information which the students could choose to explore, thereby learning basic science concepts and techniques relevant to the domain. The project is based on a creative use of emerging educational and telecommunications technologies grounded in sound and well-tested pedagogical principles.Summary of Anticipated Results and Implications:In Phase I, we anticipate a "proof-of-concept" system that aids students in problem-based learning on an authentic problem. In Phase II, we anticipate a full implementation of this system with several authentic problems. This will be the direct basis for commercial products such as (a) Repository of problems and resources for problem-based science education (for educators and universities); (b) Textbook addendum consisting of integrative problems; and (c) Interactive edutainment games for science education.
