BP A has identified three potential audiences for respite guide materials: (1) the families of children with disabilities, (2) respite providers, and (3) referral sources. In this project, we propose to investigate the information and support needs of these three groups. We will classify the models of respite service currently in existence, focusing particularly on effective and innovative practices. Through a review of the current literature and discussions with a variety of referral agencies, consumers, program operators, and funders, we will identify the range of respite care information and support needs. From our findings, we will specify the informational products and services desired by different audiences and we will explore the cost of developing such products or services. Those that appear to be most beneficial, innovative, and economical will be targeted for research and development in a Phase II effort.Anticipated Results and

Potential Commercial Applications:
BPA will develop guide materials designed to (1) improve the quality of existing respite care, (2) increase the available supply of that care, and (3) assist consumers in making the best use of services available to them. These materials may take various forms, including products such as manuals, software packages, and videotapes, as well as services, such as technical assistance and training. Although some materials may be designed to provide consumer education, it is anticipated that the majority of sales will be to providers, referral agencies, and funding sources.Key Words: Respite, children with disabilities, guide materials, program modelsTopic 8.6: Guide Materials for Respite Care for Families with Members who are Disabled
