Energy degraders for use in rare isotope beams can require complex designs and/or precision fabrication. Reactive Innovations, LLC is proposing to develop a method for producing energy degraders utilizing an electroforming process. The Phase I program will be used to demonstrate the viability of the proposed process by fabricating a prototype wedge shaped degrader and characterizing the material for dimensional uniformity, morphology, and purity. The Phase II effort will focus on working with a rare isotope beam facility to develop an appropriate design and test the degrader performance in-situ. Continuous improvements will be made based upon assessment of prototypes. Process repeatability, degrader quality, scale-up, and cost will also be examined. Commercial Applications and Other
Benefits: The specific market for the proposed device is for use at rare isotope facilities. The product may also be used to control beam power for particle accelerators and therefore would have wider application within the high energy physics community. Large commercial markets can be found for the electroforming process in the production of micro-channel heat changers.
