CO2 is one of the major components that cause global warming. Current technologies for CO2 separation are too expensive, especially with respect to CO2 capture from post combustion flue gas. This project will develop a low-cost viable process, Phase Transitional Absorption, to capture CO2 from coal-based power plant flue gas. The features of Phase Transitional Absorption include high absorption rate, high CO2 loading capacity, and low regeneration heat and temperature. Phase I will determine the optimum regeneration conditions, the form of the regenerator, and the regeneration kinetics. In Phase II, a pilot facility will be built and used to conduct the experiments needed to provide the necessary data for process design and cost analysis.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:
The Phase Transitional Absorption process would capture CO2 from flue gas with low capital investment and high efficiency, and would cut the operational costs of conventional processes by 80%.
