This project will develop technology for the production of cost effective, two-dimensional readout boards for the Gas-Electron Multiplier (GEM) chambers used in nuclear and particle physics research. Phase I will quantify the readout board performance that can be achieved with modern, standard manufacturing processes. Two types of readout boards will constructed with varying geometries based upon theoretical calculations. Readout board performance will be tested, and the results will be analyzed to determine the optimum configuration. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee GEM detectors have potential use in many types of research such as nuclear physics, high energy particle physics, and astrophysics. Other potential uses include medical imaging, nuclear non-proliferation, and homeland security applications.
