The reliable removal of respirable fine particles from advanced coal burning power plants will be difficult and expensive with conventional technologies. This project will develop an innovative means of applying wet electrostatic precipitation (ESP) for fine particulate control with removal efficiencies in excess of 99.99~o. The approach builds on the success of the laminar flow concept to achieve near total collection efficiency within a short residence time. The concept offers a promising means of reducing ESP residence times by a factor of three compared to the conventional wet ESP approach, thus reducing cost significantly.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:
The proposed concept should be applicable to all fine particulate control applications including coal-based industrial and power generation markets, oil-fired power plants, and chemical process industries.
