This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project focuses on the development of a novel process for applying metallurgically-bonded coatings to thin or otherwise thermally sensitive components. The technique, suitable for both OEM and field-repair applications, is a low-thermal-impact technique for deposition of fully fused coatings for applications such as component wear and corrosion protection. This project is aimed at development of the process for coating of metallic and cermet materials to high-strength steel and to nickel and titanium alloy components for military and civilian aerospace applications. Coating-process development will include numerical simulations, experimental deposition, and diagnostics. Fully sintered metallurgically bonded coatings will improve wear and corrosion resistance of the thin components without degrading their mechanical properties.
