An uncooled thermal detector with low heat transfer connecting wires allows the detector to approach the S/N limit of a cooled photon detector. The limitation of the detector is not heat transfer. It is the thinness of the material that can be manufactured with the required mechanical integrity. A thin detector is proposed that will meet many imaging requirements and still be close to the photon S/N limit. A detector of one half the thinness would approach the limit even closer.
