The proposed project will determine the feasibility for integration of LIGA-fabricated components with bulk micromachined components to fabricate implantable closed loop monitoring and drug delivery systems. Such a system could easily be coupled with state-of-the-art medicaments to manage a wide range of disease states including hypertension and diabetes. When coupled with appropriate sensors, this system could also provide means for protection of military personnel against chemical attack. Most implantable microfluidic systems have been structured around the concept of an active pump. We have demonstrated in the Regional Technology Alliance for High Aspect Ratio MicroElectroMechanical Systems (DARPA HI-MEMS), of which IEP is a member, that microfluidic systems can operate with constant pressure reservoirs as the power source. The major objective of this Phase I activity is to identify the mechanisms and technologies to integrate the valve system (developed as a component of the DARPA sponsored HI-MEMS Alliance) into a fully functional, implantable monitoring and control system. We will identify the technologies and development resources which are adequately advanced for utilization in completion of our novel microfluidics system. The major deliverable for Phase I will be a feasibility report and Phase II development plan.
