Electronically steered phase arrays are ideally suited for rapid surface surveillance and sea-spike removal to detect exposed submarine periscopes and cruise missiles. Because of the limited space available on typical warships, the necessary aperature cannot be realized with conventional structures. A novel self-calibrating non-rigid structure is proposed to alleviate this problem. New surface surveillance techniques that map the ocean surface and provide enhanced detection capability are proposed to exploit this new radar system.
