The objective of the proposed research and development work is to create non-lethal munitions that generate high-power microwave (HPM) pulses to defeat the electronics used to activate Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or to attack blasting caps to pre-detonate IEDs. To provide the best Phase I results we plan to develop HPM munitions (which we call HPM grenades whether they are hand-emplace, thrown, or launched) of three types. We base each of the types on a miniature explosive-driven generator that uses less than 10 grams of high explosive as its power source. HPM grenades of each type will fit into existing form factors such as hand or robot delivered munitions, 40 mm grenades, Rocket Propelled Grenades, and Stinger, Hydra, and Javelin missiles as requested by topic A13-58, Non-Lethal Munitions for Defeating Improvised Explosive Devices, contained in the U.S. Army Solicitation A13-058.
