The objectives of this proposal are to identify the injury patterns and possible causations during military rollover crashes, and to critically review the injury mechanisms, available physical and virtual tests related to military rollover crashes. First, an epidemiological review of the victims involved in military ground vehicle rollover crashes will be conducted to identify the injury patterns and sources. Next, the risk factors associated with the likelihood of the top three most commonly injured body regions will be evaluated by a series of logistic regression analyses. Two critical literature reviews regarding the injury mechanism and tolerance, as well as the existing virtual and physical test devices will be conducted thereafter. Based on these two reviews, a plan will be developed to reconcile various rollover crash modes to a limited set of rollover tests for military vehicles. It is expected that the proposed studies will give us a better understanding of the most commonly injured body regions during military rollover crashes, why these injuries occurred, and how to setup a systematic approach to prevent them. Findings from this study will be used to derive Phase II objectives for reducing rollover associated injuries.
