The objective of this proposal is to determine the availability of off-the-shelf fan systems and components to aid in the removal of heat from air to air heat exchangers. The results of this proposed study would also be used in other areas of ground vehicles that produce high heat and slow heat rejection such as brakes on heavy transports or electric motors and batteries. Design of the fan systems and components must take into account the ever increasing need for increased airflow in a smaller package dictated by mounting locations inside the vehicle. Reduction in size must be made while maintaining sufficient airflow, low noise levels and reduced power consumption. Furthermore, the airflow must maintain flow characteristics which allow efficient heat transfer over the item to be cooled. Fan technology is a mature discipline that is readily available and understandable to engineers and field technicians. However, identification of potential applications as well as a detailed understanding of the required performance requirements and constraints is necessary to reduce the development time and cost of the fan system. This proposal outlines the specialized set of skills and experience that Hunter Manufacturing can provide to the overall identification and development of fan systems. The Army will have a blower, or family of blowers, that are efficient and versitile. They can be used to ventilate and cool critical vehicular components. This will lead to longer life and greater reliablity as the components operate nearer their optimum operating temperature. Hunter currently supplies parts and subassemblies to the major Army Tactical and Combat vehicle builders. They will be contacted, along with the program managers office, to determine where there may be heat related problems. Hunter's WEBB division supplies the major heavy duty truck market and some key construction equipment manufacturers. They will also be surveyed to determine potential need
