Just as workers can become more productive when assisted by persons performing administrative or other offline tasks, warfighters can benefit from assistance. The existence of internet services on the Army's telecommunications system can make this possible by providing the infrastructure for these services to be performed remotely, removing the assisting personnel from danger and without incurring the enormous support costs of fielded soldiers. In this project FASTMAN will develop software tools and environments which will support this type of interaction between personnel remote from the warfighter location. The system concepts will be developed around emerging commercial Internet technologies such as Java. In Phase I we will develop an overall system design, concentrating on establishing a standard platform description. In Phase II we will develop a number of prototype applications which will validate the system design. The technology developed in this project can provide the basis for providing access to personnel in remote areas using wireless and Personal Communications Systems.
