Analysis and Simulation, Inc. (AnSim) proposes to develop a Data Analysis of X-Ray Image System (DAXIS) software package. The software will analyze the digital data obtained from X-ray images using three analytical filters: wavelets, fractals, and artificial neural networks (ANN). Wavelet analysis will be used for (1) noise reduction, (2) determination of edges and curvatures, and (3) gray-scale encoding. Fractal analysis will be used to determine object textures. ANN will be used to aid in the detection of known objects. Although capable of carrying out an analysis using only one riltering technique, the unique image analysis potential of DAXIS is achieved by combining the filters in a sequential manner. The synergistic effect resulting from this combination will yield a set of parameters that will improve image analysis over existing techniques. A successful DAXIS will improve the detection and identification of objects scanned in a radiograph. The impact of this improved image analysis software will benefit agencies such as the FM and Customs baggage inspection programs, industrial manufacturing processes, and medical diagnosis efforts, such as those-used with mammography for breast cancer screening programs.
