Noetek plans to analyze the feasibility of implementing solutions to several key technical issues associated with developing an Advanced Untethered Head Mounted Display (AUHMD). Noetek will accomplish this by identifying these key issues, defining and implementing a rigorous systeme engineering trade and study mehtodology and obtaining support form a major HMD producer. Noetek will insure innovativeness by leveraging the state-of-the-art work done by this producer on a current ARPA program which in itself is expanding the Head Mounted Display (HMD) performance envelope. During Phase I, Neotek will simultaneously investigate and analyze the feasibility of implementing: (1) alternative HMD display technologies, (2) alternatives to current raster scan technology and (3) alternatives to allow Untethered operation. These areas will be analyzed concurrently to insure all issues and potential solutions take into account the impact of one on the other. Results of this much needed study will be a feasibility and development road map for untethered, high resolution, wide field-of-view, bright, full color AUHMD that is light in weight and cost effective. The first element in the AUHMD road map will be proposed for prototyping in Phase II.

Neotek will demonstrate the feasibility of implementing innovative solutions to all key technical issues associated with the development of an Advanced Untethered Head Mounted Display (AUHMD). NEOTEK will accomplish this by selecting the key issues identified in phase I, defining a total system's engineering solution and developing integrated operational prototypes for all key technologies. Neotek will insure innovativeness by leveraging the state-of-the-art work done by KEG and its other subcontractors together with its unique image manipulation process to extend and-demonstrate the Head Mounted Display (HMD) performance/Technology envelope. During phase II, Neotek will simultaneously specify a complete HMD System and implement prototypes of key technologies identified in Phase I. This demonstration will address (1) Suitable HMD display technologies, (2) a unique and effective alternative to current raster scan implementations and, (3) Untethered operation. This demonstration will insure all issues-associated with HMD's are resolved. Results of this much needed feasibility demonstration will be a springboard for truly cost effective development targeted to a variety of uses. An untethered, high resolution, wide field-of-view, bright, full color AUHMD that is both light in weight and cost effective will be available with only limited customization indicated to target to user specific needs.
